Legionaries

Each Century is broken down into 2 Vexillations of 40 men. Each Vexillation carried a Signifer (Standard) or Manus Signifer (Griffon Standard), a Cornicen (Trumpeter) and a Centurion (Captain) or Optio (Sergeant).

Each Vexillation is further broken down into parent and detachment units. While normaly these units are in close relation, the detachments can move off to support other units or pursue the enemy while the parent units continue on in formation.

The most important part of the Century is the individual Legionaire. These elite swordsmen have trained for many years to become powerful killing machines with no fear and no remorse. The Legionaries carry a large Scutum shield and a short sword called a Gladius. This weaponry combined with lightweight plate armor provides excellent protection for the individual fighting man as well as deadly killing power when packed into dense formations were the short swords can easily be thrust over or between the shield wall to slay the enemy. Legionaries are highly trained and will rarely flee from a fearful sight of the enemy, especially when in the presence of the Eagle Standards of the Legion. Their methodial, silent advance and then violent charge combined with flanking movements by detachments is enough to panic most enemies before the prolonged combat can be reached.
