Sagittarii
Many Vexillations will be assigned skirmishers, usually "Sagittarii" (Auxillia Archers) that can perform various missions in battle, but ultimately these Skirmishers' goal is to support the Vexillation so that it may enter battle without taking excessive casualties. The Archers do this by either screening the Vexillation from other missile units or by protecting the exposed flanks or rear of the Vexillation from enemy skirmishers and cavalry. These archers will harrass the enemy and draw them into a frontal assault against the Legionaries, then quickly retire to the rear of the army in order to regroup and re-deploy.
